By Ranjeet Batra
President Pranab Mukherjee today expressed confidence that the Indian economy is robust enough to battle crisis, urging the people to remain positive in this hour of crisis.
“Sometimes we find negative sentiments expressed in certain quarters, but being in economic administration of this country as minister for more than four decades, I am not disappointed,” Mukherjee said while addressing the first convocation of IIT Indore.
“If we have registered 5 per cent growth in 2012-13, we should feel concerned but we should not feel panicky because Indian economy has resilience to overcome the problems,” he added.
The president remarked that during the first Five-Year Plan the economic growth of the country was recorded at 3 per cent and in the 80s it jumped to 5.5 per cent. In 90s, it was 6 percent and then in the next ten years, the economy touched 7.9 per cent growth.
The president noted that it is necessary that the policy makers should think of ways to improve the quality of education. “Along with measures to increase quantity, the drive to enhance the quality of education should engage the attention of policy makers,” the President said.
“Technology can enable refinement in teaching methodology and it can address the challenges of quantity, quality, accessibility and faculty shortage,” he added.
